Policy Introduction

Dutch authorities allow tourists to fly drones under Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (IenW) regulations. The IenW has issued a series of regulations for drone flight operations. Some highlights of these regulations are as follows:

Fly below IenW’s altitude limit of 120 m

Do not fly at night

Do not fly over crowds of people and or buildings

Operators must keep aircraft within their line of sight while flying

Follow all local rules and regulations regarding the flight of UAVs

Respect image and privacy rights

Steps to follow as a new drone pilot

  • Flying drones for commercial or professional benefits or payment (excluding teaching the flying of model aircraft) is not a recognized under the rules and regulations for model aircraft in The Netherlands.
  • Flights may only take place under conditions and in locations where there is a good visual sight from the ground to the surrounding airspace.
  • Flying is only permitted in Category G airspaces.
  • The maximum weight for private drones is 25 kg.
  • First person view (FPV) flights are prohibited.

Carry-on BaggageEach passenger can carry no more than 20 detached batteries on board. Attached batteries can be carried on board.
Checked-in BaggageDetached batteries cannot be checked in. Equipment with small attached batteries can be checked in.
Common EquipmentMavic Series, Phantom Series, Spark, Osmo Series, product accessories.

Medium Batteries

Battery Energy100-160 Wh
Carry-on BaggageEach passenger can carry no more than 2 detached batteries on board. Attached batteries can be carried on board.
Checked-in BaggageDetached batteries cannot be checked in. Equipment with medium attached batteries can be checked in.
Common EquipmentCertain Inspire and Matrice aircraft.
